Background and training
I undertook my teacher training at Oxford Brookes University, graduating in 1999 with a BA (Hons) 2:1 in Education. I spent 16 years working as a classroom teacher both in state and private schools in the UK and overseas. In addition I have done two years of part-time life coach training which has provided me with useful learning to supplement my teaching.
From the beginning of my teacher training I have been motivated by the desire to build children's confidence as well as to support their academic achievements. I noticed very early on that the dynamics of a classroom had a huge impact on the learning of pupils. As a primary school class teacher, it was always my intention to create a balanced and happy class: to support those children with less confidence, allowing them space to thrive and be seen, and ensuring that everyone had opportunities to grow, flourish and develop. I strived to create an environment that was safe, friendly and fun. From this foundation learning could be enjoyed and absorbed.
After deciding to leave the classroom six years ago, I worked with a tuition service in Surrey for four-years, covering English and Maths in Key Stages 2 and 3. After moving to Hove I set up my own tuition practice, working one-to-one to help children through challenging periods of their learning, either to prepare for rigorous entrance exams, or to assist children who would benefit from additional support.
I currently offer private tuition in a school in Surrey for two days a week, and I also work locally in Brighton and Hove providing weekly, hourly tuition to children in their own homes. I have found that regular weekly sessions not only improve a child's academic ability and therefore their confidence in the classroom but also enhances their ability to problem solve, to think laterally and independently and to develop strong study skills.
